Your first day in China should feel simple: land, pass arrival checks, get connected, reach the hotel, and know what happens next. The smoother you make those first hours, the easier the rest of the trip becomes.

1. Plan airport to hotel before departure

Do not wait until you land to decide how to reach the hotel. Before departure, write down the airport name, terminal, hotel address in English and Chinese, and your planned transfer method.

  • Airport taxi or ride-hailing can be convenient with luggage.
  • Airport express trains can be good in major cities if your hotel is near a station.
  • Private transfer may be worth it for families, late arrivals, or first-time visitors.

2. Get connected early

Mobile data makes maps, translation, hotel contact, and ride-hailing much easier. Consider an eSIM, roaming plan, or local SIM option before you travel. Keep screenshots of your hotel address and booking confirmation in case data is slow at arrival.

3. Use official train information when planning rail trips

China’s high-speed rail network is useful for many city pairs. For official train information, start with 12306 China Railway. Pay attention to the station name because many cities have multiple stations.

When choosing hotels around train travel, check the station-to-hotel route, not just the train time.

4. Leave buffer time for the first 24 hours

After a long international flight, even simple tasks take longer: passport checks, baggage, transport, check-in, food, and getting oriented. Avoid scheduling an important tour or tight train connection immediately after landing.

5. Keep addresses bilingual

Save hotel names, addresses, and key destinations in both English and Chinese. This helps with taxis, hotel front desks, and local assistance.

6. Understand customs basics

If you are unsure whether you need to declare something, check official guidance from China Customs before travel and follow airport instructions on arrival.

7. Make your second move clear

Before you sleep on the first night, confirm the next day’s plan: breakfast time, first destination, transport route, and any tickets or reservations. This small habit prevents the second day from becoming a planning session.
