Xi’an Travel Guide: Terracotta Warriors and City Route
A practical Xi’an travel guide for first-time visitors: Terracotta Warriors planning, city wall, food areas, hotel location, and how to fit Xi’an into a China route.
Xi’an is the city that turns a first China trip from “big modern cities” into a deeper historical route. It is best known for the Terracotta Warriors, but the city also works well because it connects easily with Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and other major destinations.
1. How many days do you need in Xi’an?
Two nights is enough for most first-time travelers. One full day can cover the Terracotta Warriors and an evening in the city, but it feels tight. Two full days gives you time for the city wall, food areas, museums, or a slower arrival/departure.
- 1 full day: Terracotta Warriors plus simple evening walk.
- 2 full days: Terracotta Warriors, city wall, food neighborhood, museum or pagoda area.
- 3 days: better for slower travelers or those adding nearby historical sites.
2. Where to stay
First-time visitors usually do best inside or near the old city wall, close to metro access and evening food areas. This reduces daily friction and makes short walks easier after sightseeing.
If you arrive late by high-speed rail, confirm the transfer time from Xi’an North Railway Station to your hotel. If you fly, check airport transfer time and avoid booking a hotel only because it looks central on a map.
3. Planning the Terracotta Warriors
The Terracotta Warriors are outside the city center and should be treated as a half-day to full-day excursion. Do not pair it with too many other major activities unless you are comfortable with a long day.
- Start early if you want a calmer visit.
- Check current ticket and entry rules before going.
- Keep the evening simple: food, city wall area, or hotel rest.
The experience is better when you understand what you are seeing. A guide, audio guide, or well-prepared reading can make the visit much more meaningful.
4. A balanced two-day Xi’an route
- Arrival evening: check in, light walk near the old city area.
- Day 1: Terracotta Warriors, return to city, easy dinner.
- Day 2: city wall, mosque/food area, museum or Big Wild Goose Pagoda area.
- Departure: continue by train or flight to Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, or another city.
5. How to fit Xi’an into a China itinerary
Xi’an fits well between Beijing and Shanghai if you want a classic culture route. It also pairs well with Chengdu for food and pandas, or with Zhangjiajie if you want more landscape and are comfortable with extra flights.
If you use high-speed rail, confirm station names and times through 12306 China Railway. Xi’an North is the major high-speed rail station and is not the same as every hotel-area station.
6. Common mistakes
- Trying to make Xi’an a rushed day trip from another major city.
- Booking too far from the old city area without checking evening transport.
- Visiting the Terracotta Warriors without any historical context.
- Planning a tight flight or train immediately after a long sightseeing day.
7. Who should include Xi’an?
Include Xi’an if you want history, archaeology, and a city that makes the trip feel more layered. Skip it only if your trip is extremely short or if your main goal is modern cities, nature, or business travel.
