Hong Kong can work well if your international flights are better, if you want an easier soft landing, or if your route includes southern China. It can also be useful for travelers who want a familiar first stop before entering mainland cities.

• Good pairings: Hong Kong + Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Guilin/Yangshuo, Shanghai, or Beijing.
• Best use: as a gateway, stopover, or regional contrast.
• Weak use: forcing it into a short northern China route without enough days.

2. Treat the border as a real travel step

Moving between Hong Kong and mainland China may involve immigration checks and different travel systems. Before you book, confirm current entry requirements for your passport, visa situation, transit plan, and number of entries. Rules can change, so use official sources before departure.

3. Train or flight?

High-speed rail can be efficient for nearby mainland cities and some longer routes, but station location and ticket requirements matter. Flights can be better for distant cities or if your schedule is tight. The right answer depends on luggage, passport details, station comfort, and your next hotel location.
